Blue Chips are large multinational companies with sound balance sheets and sounder reputations. They have been in their industry for a considerable amount of time and ownership of their shares are generally regarded as safe investments. They are usually able to weather economic downturns with their superior balance sheets. Many of the companies that are in the Dow Jones Industrial Average are regarded as blue chips.
