If you're looking for superior long-term performance, Janus is a company you should consider. Janus, which has been in existence for almost 30 years, became one of the fastest-growing mutual fund companies in the late 1990s. According to the Janus Website, founder and CEO Tom Bailey has always maintained a positive, hands-on approach that focuses on teamwork and camaraderie, with the customers' needs receiving first priority. The company, which is based in Denver, CO, utilizes what it refers to as a "bottom-up, research-intensive stockpicking approach," which has led to the success of the funds. Being located outside of Wall Street gives the company a fresher view of the financial world, Bailey comments. |

Janus manages more than 40 equity, income, and money market funds; and investors may choose from among regular, retirement, and educational accounts. Janus introduced its new, nondiversified fund, Janus Orion, earlier this year. The aggressive growth fund, which is managed by Ron Sachs, will invest in 20 to 30 companies, regardless of size or location. The goal of the fund, according to Janus, is to "offer upside potential, while maintaining a staunch reliance on Janus' rigorous research to limit surprises on the downside." Ron Sachs has been with Janus since 1996 and assisted in managing the Janus Enterprise Fund with Jim Goff. Janus's willingness to change and seek new investment opportunities is what makes this a solid choice for an investor at any investment level. Another popular fund is the Janus 20 (Figure 1). For a beginning investor, Janus offers some alternatives to the standard $2,500 initial deposit for most mutual fund accounts. You can choose to open a new account (open to new investors) for only $500 and make automatic monthly deposits of $100 until your balance reaches $2,500. You can also open a new retirement fund, Education IRA or UGMA/UTMA (gift or transfer to minor) account with a minimum of $500. (See the Janus Website for further information regarding fees and accounts.) Janus has everything you need for opening a new account online at its Website. You'll find a listing of a fund's performance, managers, overview, and daily net asset values (NAVs). You'll also have access to the account forms and applications needed to open an account. The company's background and press releases are also easily accessed on the site. Be sure to read through the individual prospectuses of the various funds before making a final decision of what fund is right for your investment goals.
