STOCKS & COMMODITIES Editor Thom Hartle spoke with Mogey via telephone on April 24, 1996, about the Foundation's research into the influence of cycles on the stock market and the commodities and bond markets. Have you always been interested in economic and market cycles? No. In college, I studied the classics - Greek and Latin and philosophy. But during my high school days, I was keenly interested in investing and had a portfolio of stocks. That was in the late 1950s, and then I started trading futures in the late 1960s. I continued to trade futures, and I made money, so I assumed that I was brilliant, but, of course, it turned out it was just a bull market and I was long. Were you using technical and fundamental methods? I used just fundamental methods during the early days. Then I started using technical methods when I started trading futures. I continued to study trading futures and equities and I primarily traded the short-term trends. Ultimately, I went full time into trading in the 1980s and specialized in trading metals. For a company? It was a private investment company on the West Coast.
